Opening Keynote: "Personalized Learning: The Why, How, and What"

How are you or your school making learning personal? If all kids are doing the same thing the same way at the same time a change of course is warranted. Personalized learning is not about putting all kids in front of a device at the same time on an adaptive learning tool to “collect” data. It’s about a fundamental shift from the “what” to the “who” to emphasize personal ownership of learning through relevant contexts and applications. The goal is equity for all. In this session, participants will explore blended strategies and examples on how to personalize learning with and without technology in any classroom.

Cold Martians Looking for Hot Chile!

We have just been visited by martians who ate hot green chile cheeseburgers at Sparky's in Hatch. They are now demanding that we provide them with this fantastic green plant. 6,7, and 8th grade scientists are needed to collaborate to find a way to help Martians grow their own HOT chile on their cold planet. 6th grade scientists will need to calculate planet rotations to determine the best time to launch a mission. They will design and build a rover to deliver the seed. 7th grade scientists will be studying genetics and developing the hottest variety for seed, and designing a lightweight greenhouse that will grow chile on Mars. 8th grade scientists will be studying soil and water qualities and learning how to test each for quality assurance. They will create a perfect medium to grow chile and a light weight container to ship it to Mars. Join us to look at and learn about these Mission to Mars plans.

My Planet, My Community: An Example of Project-Based Service Learning for Remote Teaching

Description:
This session will provide an overview of a virtual project-based service learning project. The project involves students engaging in service via the Zooniverse website, which is an easy-to-use platform for global research in which anyone can participate. The website features a wide variety of research projects that connect to a range of subject areas, and new projects are initiated frequently as others are closed out. Students in all grade levels can interact with the website to make real contributions to research from around the planet, in some cases the participants don’t even need to know how to read; as long as they can identify objects in a picture, they can contribute. The My Planet, My Community project connects to Common Core standards in language arts as well as the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for students. The materials are designed for high school students, but all rubrics can be adapted easily for younger students. Virtual documents and materials related to the project will be distributed for all conference attendees. This project can be conducted virtually or in-person.

Keynote: Impact the Narrative (all attend)

Every interaction matters because every interaction could be the one they talk about for the rest of their lives. School perception is often based on the narrative of those who attended schools years ago. If we are INTENTIONAL about walking into every conversation knowing it could be the one they talk about for years to come, we OPEN DOORS for that outside to see us for who we are and BUILD MOMENTUM by creating a culture where every story matters we have a tremendous opportunity to impact the narrative of our students, teachers, and community.
