Description:
This session will provide an overview of a virtual project-based service learning project. The project involves students engaging in service via the Zooniverse website, which is an easy-to-use platform for global research in which anyone can participate. The website features a wide variety of research projects that connect to a range of subject areas, and new projects are initiated frequently as others are closed out. Students in all grade levels can interact with the website to make real contributions to research from around the planet, in some cases the participants don’t even need to know how to read; as long as they can identify objects in a picture, they can contribute. The My Planet, My Community project connects to Common Core standards in language arts as well as the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for students. The materials are designed for high school students, but all rubrics can be adapted easily for younger students. Virtual documents and materials related to the project will be distributed for all conference attendees. This project can be conducted virtually or in-person.
